    Species Description - Emergent tree, to 40 m tall, unbuttressed. Bark slightly fissured, the inner bark red. Leaves: petioles 15-21 mm long; blades elliptic to narrowly elliptic, 10-25 x 4.5-10 cm, glabrous, with 14-17 pairs of secondary veins, without domatia in axils, the tertiary veins finely percurrent, forming 135° angle with midrib; base obtuse; apex acuminate; margins entire. Inflorescences with pedicels barely discernible. Flowers actinomorphic, ca. 5 mm diam.; calyx fused at base into rim 0.6-0.7 mm high, the lobes broadly triangular; petals glabrous, yellowish white; androecium with 10 stamens, 5 long and 5 short, these inserted on margin of staminal ring, the filaments flattened, especially on longer stamens, the anthers nodding inward, yellow; hypanthium glabrous; style erect, ca. 0.6 mm long. Fruits cylindric, 8-11 x 3-4 cm, the exocarp reddish brown, often with longitudinal ribs.

    Phenology. Flowers from Dec to Feb throughout its range. Flowering trees have not yet been observed at Km 41. Common name. Tauarí. Comments. This species is characterized by its (1) shallowly fissured outer bark with red inner bark, (2) percurrent tertiary veins, (3) small flowers, and (4) cylindric fruits that are often longitudinally ribbed.

    Habitat. Terra firme. The 100-ha plot contains 40 individuals of this species >10 cm dbh.
