    Genus Description - Dioecious or polygamous trees or shrubs, usually stranglers or less often climbers. Leaves glabrous, thick, leathery. Flowers unisexual or bisexual, large, solitary or produced on terminal cymes; bracts 2-6, small; calyx of 4-6 rounded, overlapping sepals; corolla of 4-9 distinct, overlapping petals; stamens numerous, the filament usually united at base; staminodes present (in pistillate flowers) or wanting (in staminate flowers); ovary of 4-12 carpels, with numerous ovules, the style thick, the stigmatic surface peltate. Fruit a fleshy capsule, splitting along numerous valves; seeds minute, covered with bright, reddish aril.
