Description
Species Description - Shrub or small tree, to 10 m tall; branches ascending, bluish green, arising near the base from a short trunk, this with deciduous spines; ribs 9-14; areoles 1-2 cm apart; spines usually 13, acicular, yellow turning gray with brown tips, 3-7 cm long. Flowers funnel-shaped, 8-9 cm long; perianth tube with fleshy salmoncolored segments, the inner segments white to greenish; stamens shorter than the perianth; the stigma club-shaped, white.' Fruit 5-6 cm long, ellipsoid, turning from green to scarlet, covered with clusters of deciduous spines, the pulp red.
Distribution and Ecology - Uncommon in dry, coastal scrub. Drunk Bay (A5061). Also occurs on Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and the Puerto Rican islands of Desecheo, Muertos, and Mona.
