Description
Genus Description - Lianas or trailing shrubs, climbing by means of adventitious roots; stems elongate, 4-12 -angled or -ribbed, irregularly aerial roots; areoles small, usually elevated, densely covered with short woolly hairs; spines acicular and short. Flowers nocturnal, solitary, large, funnel-shaped with long tube; tube with scale-like segments, the areoles with long hairs; upper segments narrow and petal-like; stamens numerous, shorter than the perianth segment; style stout, the stigma numerous. Fruit large, reddish, covered with basal scales, spines, or bristles.

Distribution
A genus of 16 species distributed from southern United States, through Mexico to northern South America and throughout the West Indies.
