Description
Species Description - Plants decumbent and branching, large, up to 5 cm or more high. Leaves undulate, imbricate, up to 4.5 mm long, lanceolate to narrowly oblong, acute; margins without a border of differentiated cells (though thickened at the margins), ± entire to irregularly dentate at the apex, ± entire to irregularly serrulate or sharply and evenly serrate on the vaginant laminae; costa strong, ± percurrent; dorsal lamina mostly truncaterounded below; vaginant laminae ± unequal, ±1/2 the leaf length; cells essentially unistratose, infrequently .and irregularly bistratose, smooth, rounded to irregularly hexagonal, 10-15 µm, with 3-5 rows thicker in a ± darker marginal band. Archegonial branches short, axillary. Sporophytes unknown.

Fissidens bourgaeanus is comparatively large and coarse, with leaves bordered by a dark band of thicker cells. The species m ay be most closely related to F. pacificus Angstr. of Hawaii.

Distribution
Moist, shaded soil and limestone at elevations of ca. 1100 m; Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz.—Mexico; Guatemala and Honduras; Jamaica.
