    Genus Description - Erect or prostrate herbs or shrubs. Leaves alternate or rarely subopposite or whorled. Flowers in scorpioid (coiled) cymes, spikes or racemes; calyx with 5 deeply parted, lanceolate lobes; corolla trumpet- or funnel-shaped, with spreading lobes; stamens included in corolla tube, not exserted; ovary 4-locular, the style terminal, short or absent, the stigma conical. Fruit dry, splitting into 2-4 nuts.

    Distribution and Ecology - A genus with approximately 250 species, with cosmopolitan distribution.
