    Genus Description - Shrubs to small trees with whorled branching. Leaves simple; stipules deciduous. Flowers solitary or a few clustered in leaf axils; calyx hardened, conical or top-shaped, irregularly lobed, accrescent; petals narrow, twice as long as the calyx; stamens numerous, the filaments fused into an elongate tube; ovary slightly inferior, 2-3-locular, each locule with 2 ovules, the style projecting beyond the stamens, the stigma disk-shaped. Fruit slightly fleshy, fibrous, indehiscent; seeds 1 or 2, slightly angular.

    Distribution and Ecology - A genus of 30-50 species, distributed from southern Mexico to northern South America, including the West Indies.
