Description
Genus Description - Shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite, pinnately compound, or rarely simple. Flowers in terminal racemes or panicles; calyx tubular or bell-shaped, 5-toothed at apex; corolla yellow or orange, tubular to funnel-shaped; stamens 4, exserted or included; ovary narrowly cylindrical, with a cup-shaped disk at base. Fruit a linear, flattened capsule with dehiscence perpendicular to the partitioning wall; seeds numerous, thin, 2-winged, the wings hyaline.
Distribution and Ecology - A genus of 14 species, 2 in Africa and the remaining 12 distributed throughout tropical America, especially in the Andean region.
