    Genus Description - Lianas or rarely small trees or shrubs; stem 4-angular when young to cylindrical when mature, in cross section with 4 phloem arms. Leaves opposite, trifoliolate, more often with terminal leaflet replaced by a long filiform coiling tendril. Flowers produced in large axillary or terminal panicles; calyx cup-shaped, truncate, bilabiate or minutely 5-denticulate at apex; corolla reddish, pink, or violet, salverform, funnel- or bell-shaped, pubescent without; stamens 4, didynamous; ovary 2-locular, with a cup-shaped disk at base. Fruit a linear, flattened capsule, the valves parallel to the partitioning wall, midvein prominent; seeds 2-winged, the wing hyaline.
