Description
Species Description - Erect or ascending herb to 1 m tall; stems sometimes pubescent below, otherwise glabrous. Leaves sessile or on winged petioles, upper leaves sometimes reduced to bracts; blades greatly varying in size, 3-15 x 1-6.5 cm, but usually twice or more than twice as long as wide, membranous, glabrous, the apex acute, the base either auriculate and expanded or tapering, the margins serrate. Heads with ca. 20-50 flowers; involucre cylindrical, ca. 1 cm tall, about 1-2 times longer than wide; involucral bracts linear, green. Corollas red, ca. 1 cm long, extended above tips of the involucral bracts. Achenes slender, ca. 4 mm long, ribbed, puberulent on ribs; pappus of many silky white bristles, 6-7 mm long.

Distribution
An occasional weed in disturbed sites. Bordeaux Mountain (M17024), Maria Bluff (A612), Maho Bay (A2408). Also on St. Croix and St. Thomas; tropical America, Florida, and some Pacific islands.
