    Species Description - Shrubs; branchlets not aromatic, moderately tawny-strigulose; petioles 1-1.5 cm. long, canaliculate, coarse, densely strigulose to strigose; leaf-blades 12-15 cm. long, 4-5.5 cm. wide, coriaceous, oblanceolate, rarely elliptic, the tips acute to acuminate, the bases cuneate, the upper surface glabrous, dull, the lower surface sparsely strigulose (sericeous in var. sericea), the margins slightly to very strongly revolute, the costa impressed above, prominent beneath, the 7-12 pairs of primary veins divergent at (40-) 55-60°, impressed above, prominent beneath, the reticulation obscure on both surfaces. Inflorescences sessile or subsessile, narrow, axillary and subterminal, multiflorous, paniculate, % the length of the subtending leaf; peduncles 0-0.5 cm. long, coarse, tawny-strigulose to strigose, the rachises tawny-strigulose to strigose (pilose, in var. pilosa) ; pedicels 2-3 mm . long, densely tawny-strigose; flowers 4-5 mm. long; outer perianth-segments 2-3 mm. long, 1.5-2.5 mm. wide, ovate, densely tawny-strigose without, glabrous within; inner perianth-segments 4-5 mm. long, elliptic, densely tawny-strigose on both surfaces; filaments of series I and II 1.7-2 mm. long, strigulose, the anthers 1 mm. long, oblong, retuse, quadrilocular; staminodia of series III 3.1 mm. long, strigose, the glands adnate to the basal 1/3 of the staminodia (filaments pubescent, glands adnate to the basal 1/4 of the filament, the anthers quadrilocular with the upper locules reduced, laterally dehiscent in var. sericea) ; staminodia of series IV sagittate with terminal bristles; gynoecium glabrous, the ovary 1 mm. long, globose; style 1.5 mm., slender; stigma peltate. Infructescence with few fruits; perianth-segments spreading to involute, persistent in their entirety; fruits globose, glaucous, with persistent style (observed only in var. pilosa).
