    Species Description - Rhizome erect; rhizome scales 3-5 mm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide, concolorous, dark golden brown, margin with acute, toothlike undulations, not prolonged into hairlike uniseriate tip; fronds to 120 cm long, 20 cm wide, clumped; stipe 1/3-1/2 the frond length, dark reddish-brown to black, glabrous except for sparse scales at base; blade lanceolate, bipinnate-pinnatifid to tripinnate; segments lanceolate, texture thin, wrinkled, glabrous above, white farinose below, margin toothed, slightly recurved; veins free, prominent; sori elongate along the veins, appearing as black specks scattered among the white farina; spores reddish-brown.

    Acrostichum calomelanos Linnaeus, Sp. pl. 2: 1072. 1753. Type. “LINN sheet 1245.19, photos A, GH are this sp.” (R. Tryon, 1962). Ceropteris serrata Fée, Mém. foug. 8: 81. 1857. Type. Mexico. [Veracruz:] Orizaba, Schaffner 162 (P?). For additional synonyms, see R. Tryon (1962). Pityrogramma calomelanos is distinguished from P. tartarea by its finer blade dissection, ascending segments and occurrence at lower elevations. Oaxacan material is referable by Tryon (1962) to var. calomelanos.
