Mecodium fendlerianum (Sturm) Copeland, Philipp. J. Sci. 67: 26. 1938. Syntypes. Venezuela. Colonia Tovar, Fendler 35 (isosyntypes BM!, BR-photo BM!), Moritz 450 (isosyntype BM!). Hymenophyllum contortum van den Bosch, Ned. Kruidk. Arch. 5: 170. 1863. Mecodium contortum (van den Bosch) Copeland, Philipp. J. Sci. 67: 26. 1938. Type. Costa Rica. Aguacate, Hoffmann s.n. (B). A. R. Smith (1981) distinguished H. undulatum (Swartz) Swartz on the basis of the latter being less crisped and the pinnae not imbricate. Proctor (1985) suggested they may not be distinct. Hymenophyllum crispum is the only other species with undulate-crispate segments in Oaxaca, but the stipe in H. undulatum is not at all alate.
