Discussion
Type. Mexico. Oaxaca: Dist. Mixe, NW slope of Cerro Zempoaltépetl, trail from Yacoche to Totontepec, mostly wet oak woods, 6500-8000' [1980-2440 m], 19 Sep 1970, Mickel 4638 (NY!) Specimens of this taxon from Chiapas (Breedlove 22928, 24310, 29353; Mickel 1247b; Matuda 2379A (NY) occur at high elevation (28003600 m) whereas Chiapas specimens of G. xiphopteroides (Breedlove 24868, 28197, 28212, 29625B, 31430, 32228, 32524 (NY)) occur from 1300 to 2200 m elevation. See G. xiphopteroides for comparison with G. pilosissima, G. leptostoma and the G. moniliformis group. The relationship of G. xiphopteroides and G. zempoaltepetlensis to each other as well as to G. rigens of Jamaica (=G. xiphopteroides s.l.) needs study, especially in the field.
