Species Description - Rhizome stout, erect; rhizome scales reddish-brown, concolorous, (9-) 12-22 mm long, (1.5-)2-3 mm wide, ovate-lanceolate, strongly toothed and crisped; fronds clumped; stipe 1823 cm long, 1/3 the frond length, stramineous, grooved, densely glandular, scaly near base with 4-9 mm long, scales with tips long, twisted, and margin strongly toothed; blade 32-50(-70) cm long, 20-40 cm wide, tripinnate-pinnatifid at base, otherwise mostly bipinnate-pinnatifid, deltate-lanceolate, basal pinnae (9-15 cm long, 56 cm wide) shorter than second pinna pair (11-18(-20) cm long, 4-6 cm wide); stipe stramineous, densely glandular; pinnae linear-deltate, only basal pinnae with larger basiscopic basal pinnule (20-40 mm long), acroscopic basal pinnule shorter (18-30 mm long), other pinnae equilateral to exaggerated acroscopically; costae with rare glandular hairs, scales none, pinnules acute, toothed, thin-textured, rare glandular hairs on abaxial veins, minutely glandular only in adaxial groove, scales none, margin glabrous; sori submarginal, indusia nearly round (round-reniform or cordate), 0.8-1 mm wide, glandular, flat, brown to tan.

  • Discussion

Aspidium patulum Swartz, Kongl. Vetensk. Acad. Handl. 1817: 64. 1817. Type. Brazil. Minas Gerais, Freyreiss s.n. (S). Aspidium apertum Fée, Mém. foug. 8: 106. 1857. Dryopteris aperta (Fée) Christensen, Index filic. 252. 1905. Syntypes. Mexico. [Veracruz:] Huatusco, Schaffner 73 (P?); [Morelos:] Cuernavaca, Craveri 73b (P!). The taxonomy of the Dryopteris patula complex is confused in terms of nomenclature and confusing in terms of the number of species and hybrids. It is greatly in need of monographic study. Within this complex we are recognizing five taxa at the species level (D. patula s.s., rosea, rossii, simplicior and cinnamomea), which are distinguishable morphologically and have distinct geographic ranges and elevations. Infrequent intermediates occur and may represent hybrids. In the restricted sense, D. patula has lanceolate fronds, large (9-22 mm) rhizome scales which are strongly toothed, crisped and have a long, twisted hair-tip, and glabrous laminar surfaces (except for costular groove adaxially and rare glands on the abaxial veins). Occurring in southern Mexico, it has only been found on the Atlantic slope in Oaxaca. See the other taxa for distinguishing features.

  • Distribution

Terrestrial (rarely abnormally epiphytic) on Atlantic slope; Ixtlán, Mixe, Teo-titlán, Villa Alta; 1300-2500 m. Mexico (DF, Ver, Oax, Chis); Guat to Pan; Braz.
