  • Description

    Species Description - Rhizome short-creeping, horizontal, compact; rhizome scales 2-3 mm long, 0.5 mm wide, linear-lanceolate, black, sclerotic, lustrous, margin ciliate-denticulate; fronds to 54 cm long but generally only ca. 15-20 cm, clumped; stipe ca. 1/2 the frond length, black, terete, clothed at base with dark brown, ciliate-denticulate scales (2-3 mm long, 0.5 mm wide), becoming light brown at base and midrib, then totally light brown, and a tomentum of much-reduced dissected appressed scales, some nearly to stellate hairs; blade narrowly elliptic, only slightly narrowed at base, bipinnate to bipinnate-pinnatifid; pinnae 16-30 pairs, subcoriaceous, upper surface with sparse white to orange hairs (0.5-1.0 mm long), lower surface densely clothed with rusty, deeply ciliate scales (1 mm long, 0.5 mm wide), covering the white farina; sori at vein tips, laminar margin somewhat curved, not modified into false in-dusium; spores tan to black.

San Luis Potosí: San José Pass, Pringle 3297 (US!). Cheilanthes galeottii is unique among Oaxacan Cheilanthes in having both farina and scales on the pinna undersurface.
