Description
Species Description - Rhizome horizontal, short-creeping, 2-3 mm diam. (plus leaf bases); rhizome scales dark castaneous at apex to mostly black, linear, entire, 1.5-3 mm long, 0.5 mm wide; fronds 25-80 cm long, clumped; stipe ½-2/3 the frond length, castaneous to atropurpureous, glabrous with few broad scales at base, lustrous; blade 2-5 times pinnate at base, broadly ovate (to linear-lanceolate); pinnae 5-8 compound pairs, alternate, stalked; axes with a pale spot at each branching; segments rhombic-flabellate or obovate, mostly broadly cuneate (120-180°, rarely less than 90°) at base, 8-12 mm long, not articulate, glabrous, rarely glaucous beneath, margin incised-lobate, stalked (1-5 mm long), stalk color bleeding into leaf base or stopping at segment base, lobes rounded; sori 1-2 per lobe, linear-oblong to lunate, 1-8 mm long; indusium glabrous, whitened; spores tan to yellow.

Discussion
Type. Mexico. 1850, Karwinsky s.n. (B!; isotype BR!). Adiantum convolutum Fournier, Mexic. pi. 1: 127, t. 6. 1872. Syntypes. Mexico. Veracruz: Orizaba, Bottieri 18 (P! - 2 sheets); Ghiesbreght 406 (P!-2 sheets; isosyntype US!). Among the 2-5-pinnate taxa without conform terminal pinnae, the non-articulate stalks with the color passing onto the segment base and light spots at each division of the rachis and rachillae distinguish this species.
