Fronds extremely variable, even on the same plant, nearly sessile or with stipes up to 6 mm long; stipes (if present) usually covered with hairlike rhizoids like those of rhizome. Sori few (1-6), on apical lobes; involucres flattened-turbinate, 1.5-2.5 mm long, free or but slightly immersed; mouth broadly 2-lipped, the lips circular, somewhat flaring, dark marginate, the marginal band often consisting of a blackish line 1 cell wide at edge, then a brown zone 3-7 cells wide.

  • Discussion

Type. Hedwig, t. 6, fig. 3 (as cited above), designated by Wessels Boer (1962), based on material from an unknown locality, perhaps Jamaica. Morton (1967) thought that Swartz, from Jamaica, Herb. Willd. 20188 (B) might be an isotype.

Syn. Trichomanes muscoides Swartz, J. Bot. (Schrader) 1800(2): 95. 1802 (nomen superfl.), (Type. Swartz, from Jamaica, S, isotype SBT.)
