Description
Species Description - Stem sparsely to moderately armed with relatively short recurved prickles along the angles; prickles 1-1.5 mm long. Leaves subsessile, rarely short-petioled; leaf blades linear lanceolate to oblanceolate, 5.5-14 cm long, 0.8-1.5 cm wide, usually cordate, more or less clasping, rarely somewhat hastate, almost glabrous on both surfaces but rarely bearing some appressed simple multiseriate hairs on upper surface and major veins beneath, rarely densely glandular-pubescent. Ocreae oblique at the tip, short-ciliate, usually almost glabrous but sometimes bearing some bristlelike hairs along the veins, rarely densely glandular-pubescent; pedicels usually glandular-pubescent.

Distribution. In southeastern South America, central America, Cuba, and the southeastern United States (Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina); also occurs in southeastern Africa (Figs. 11, 32, and 33).
