P. juliflora var. torreyana Benson P. chilensis Hort. Trans-Pecos Texas to California but interrupted by P. velutina in desert Arizona. River bottoms and canyon floors, washes, rock slopes and ridges, desert flats with greasewood, sand dunes; ruderal areas, e.g., along roadsides and irrigation ditches; sometimes cultivated. 200-6500 ft. March-June. Johnston (1962) and Isely (1972) have both discussed variance in var. torreyana and relationships to var. glandulosa and P. velutina.
