Discussion
Previously known only from as far south as Cauca and El Valle in Colombia, the species has now been found near Sevilla de Oro, Azuay, Ecuador (Camp E-1391). The Ecuadorian material has smaller flowers than most (but not all) more northern collections. Miconia orcheotoma is very closely related to M. biappen-diculata, but has more obvious fourth and fifth primary leaf veins.
