Type Collection: W. H. Camp E-1603 (holotype US 2404695; isotype NY; 1 additional isotype to be distributed), collected in the region of Tambo Consuelo, eastern slope of the cordillera, valley of the ríos Negro and Chupianza, on the trail from Sevilla de Oro to Mendez, Prov. Santiago-Zamora, Ecuador, elev. 2400 m, 16 Dec. 1944. “Trees 5-6 m. Leaves pale yellowish green, shining above; dull below. Corolla and filaments white; anthers yellow.” Both M. amabilis and M. bangii have considerably larger leaves; the former has the lower leaf surfaces with laxer venation (the principal veins being sparsely furfuraceous), moderately furfuraceous-puberulous inflorescences and hypanthia, and larger calyx lobes; the latter has distinctly 5-plinerved leaves and slightly (ca. 25%) longer, relatively narrower anthers. Miconia terera Naud. differs at least in the distinctly plinerved leaves and (by implication) glabrous filaments and style. Despite the geographic disjunction, I have recently referred Ecuadorian collections from Mera (Asplund 19686,19687; Harling 3167) to M. terera; this material certainly agrees with Killip and Smith collections from Junín, Peru. Examination of Naudin’s type may well show M. cookii Gleason to be a synonym of M. terera. Miconia tonduzii Cogn.—as far as Tonduz 1948, 2112, 2113, 2113, 2116 (all US, collected in February, 1890) are concerned, as well as many later Costa Rican collections—shows 2- or indistinctly 4-pored anthers and should be placed in sect. Cremanium (and not in sect. Amblyarrhena); in vegetative features, Camp E-1603 shows some resemblance to the Costa Rican species.
