Description
Description - Leaves of rosette unknown to Mez but evidently not contracted between sheath and blade (judging from scape-bracts); scape very short; scape-bracts foliaceous with long blades, their sheaths broadly elliptic, inflated, pale rose, subglabrous within, linear-lepidote especially on the margins outside, coarsely serrate toward apex, their blades attenuate to a pungent apex, very rigid, glabrous above, densely and minutely lepidote beneath, laxly serrate with mixed antrorse and retrorse, 3 mm long spines. Inflorescence capitate-subcorymbose with short, few-flowered branches; axes covered with pale, linear scales. Floral bracts broadly elliptic, nearly equaling the sepals, tomentellous, ecarinate, minutely serrate especially toward apex; flowers to 45 mm long, exceeding the floral bracts, obscurely short-pedicellate. Sepals broadly elliptic, rounded and somewhat crisped at apex, to 30 mm long, weakly carinate, glabrous at least toward apex; petals linear-ligulate, obtuse, 36 mm long, fleshy, glabrous; stamens included; anthers linear, 7-8 mm long; ovary subprismatic, little if at all contracted at apex, covered with a brown-alutaceous tomentum.
