Leaves more than 80 in a dense rosette, 1-1.5 m long, not narrowed between sheath and blade; sheaths short and broadly subtriangular (outer) to large and elliptic (inner), pale, covered with linear dark brown scales at least toward apex; blades linear, long attenuate, 20-33 mm wide, green, minutely white-lepidote beneath, laxly serrate with curved spines 8 mm long, the inner leaves with the blades much smaller and bright red. Scape stout, short but evident, densely white-tomentose; scape-bracts like the inner leaves, their blades reflexed. Inflorescence cylindric-paniculate, dense or sublax, 15-70 cm long, white-lepidote except the petals; lower primary bracts like the scape-bracts, exceeding the branches, the upper bladeless and shorter than the branches; branches to 12-flowered. Floral bracts linear or lanceolate, acuminate, much shorter than the ovary; flowers 5 cm long, short-pedicellate. Sepals free, erect, lanceolate, acute, strongly carinate, 10-15 mm long; petals to 35 mm long, oblong, acute, purple; stamens included; filament-tube about 8 mm long; ovary subcylindric or trigonous.
