Description
Description - Plant subacaulescent, leaves many in a dense rosette, 1.3 m long; sheaths conspicuous, subelliptic, covered toward base especially beneath with coarse rusty brown scales, elsewhere showing greenish white; blades ensiform, long-attenuate, pungent, narrowed toward base, to 40 mm wide, pale green above and glabrate, slightly paler beneath and white-lepidote at first, serrate toward base with stout straight brown spines 3 mm long, entire in the middle, and sparsely and finely spinulose-serrate on the apical half. Inflorescences axillary, 10-20-flowered, corymbose; outer bracts lanceolate, equaling the sepals, antrorsely spinose-serrate toward apex, pale green, densely and coarsely brown-lepidote; pedicels short; 3-angled; sepals lance-ovate, 21 mm long, nearly 7 mm wide, mucronate at apex, sharply carinate, sparsely lepidote; petals 33 mm long, tubular-connate for more than half their length, blades suberect to spreading at anthesis, minutely cucullate; stamens shorter than the petals, filaments highly adnate to the petals, anthers oblong, 5.5 mm long; ovary slenderly ellipsoid, the epigynous tube very short; fruit much enlarged from the ovary.
