Type. Mexico. Coahuila: Jimulco, 4200 ft, 14 Sep 1939, F. Shreve 9419 (holotype: originally at NA, but later transferred to US; isotypes: GH, UC).

Description
Species Description - Subshrubs, to 0.5 m. Leaves: oblong-spathulate, sessile to subsessile, undivided, 1.5-2.5 x 0.2-0.4 cm, with a single primary vein. Flowers: sepals connate at base; corollas white; stamens connate less than ½ of length.

Discussion
Some specimens annotated as var. graminea by McVaugh and others are actually Jatropha rzedowskii J. Jiménez Ramírez.

Distribution
Jatropha dioica var. gramínea occurs west of J. dioica var. dioica, from Texas, USA, to Chihuahua, Coahuila, San Luis Potosi, and Zacatecas, Mexico, in dry sandy soils at 150-900 m. In Texas, it is restricted to the trans-Pecos region. (See Fig. 106, below.) Flowering and fruiting in late spring and early summer.
