  • Description

Species Description - Deciduous tree 5-35 m. Leaves 5-12 × 2.5-6 cm, chartaceous, obovate, subacute to acuminate at apex, cuneate at base, subglabrous when mature; domatia absent. Venation brochidodromous; midvein moderate; secondary veins 5-8 pairs, moderately spaced to distant, originating at moderately acute angles, curved; intersecondary veins usually absent; tertiary veins randomly reticulate; higher order veins conspicuous but scarcely prominent; areolation well developed. Petiole 1-2.6 cm, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, eglandular. Inflorescences 4-8 cm, simple, with all flowers bisexual; peduncle 2-3.5 cm, pubescent; rhachis 2-4.5 cm, densely pubescent. Flowers pentamerous, 5-6 × 4.5-5.5 mm; lower hypanthium 2.8-3 mm, densely appressed-pubescent; upper hypanthium 2-2.6 mm, campanulate, appressed-pubescent; calyx lobes 1-1.6 mm, appressed-pubescent, revolute to slightly so; disk sparsely pubescent to subglabrous; stamens 3-4.5 mm; style ca. 4 mm, pubescent proximally to over half way. Fruits few crowded on short rhachis, 1.2-2.5 × 3-4.6 cm, flattened, transversely oblong or elliptic-oblong in side view, usually emarginate at apex, truncate to broadly obtuse at base, pubescent, wings 2, fairly stiff, equal, 1.4-2.1 cm wide, narrowly rounded laterally; body 0.3-0.5 cm wide, slightly to strongly keeled on one face. Reproductive biology. Flowering September to December; fruiting September to December. Flowers cream-colored, green.

Terminalia mameluco is evidently closely related to T. guyanensis and T. januariensis, differing from them in its smaller, pubescent, non-shiny fruits and longer inflorescences. The last brings it closer to T. valverdeae. Pickel (1958) illustrated the differences between his T. mameluco and T. camuxa (T. januariensis) very well, showing the longer inflorescences, much more densely pubescent flowers and smaller fruits of the former. The petioles are also generally shorter than in T. guyanensis and eglandular. Alwan and Stace realized that their T. kuhlmannii was distinct from all other species of section Diptera, even in the absence of flowers, but failed to compare it with T. mameluco, which at that time they incorrectly believed represented T. oblonga. See T. lucida for differences at flowering time. There remains the possibility that this species, T. guyanensis, and T. januariensis are not specifically distinct.
