Discussion
Just as in Naucleopsis imitans, in particular if the petiole is relatively long (to 3 cm), the upper and lower part of the petiole are ± different: the lower part is thicker and in dry material dark brown and the surface slightly fissured; and the upper part is thinner and pale brown and smooth when dry.
Material of Naucleopsis caloneura with a smooth lower surface of the lamina can be confused with N. glabra specimens, which have hairy leafy twigs and stipules. The two taxa can be usually distinguished by the lateral veins, (almost) straight in the former and ± curved in the latter, and by the color of the indumentum of the twigs and stipules, brown(ish) in the former and pale yellow to whitish in the latter. -
Distribution
In the upper Amazon Basin, from Colombia to Bolivia, disjunctly also in Suriname and northern Colombia; in non-inundated forest; at low elevations.
