Discussion
The inflorescence and floral morphology are nearly identical to those of P. rotundifolia subsp. rotundifolia; however, the elliptic leaves readily distinguish P. rotundifolia subsp. hatschbachii from the orbicular-leaved specimens in the states of Goiás, Minas Gerais, and upper São Paulo.
This subspecies was named in honor of Dr. Gert Hatschbach, Director of Museu Botânico Municipal, Curitiba, Paraná. Hatschbach, a leading authority on the phytogeography of southern Brazil, has collected extensively in many regions of Brazil. -
Distribution
Piptocarpha rotundifolia subsp. hatschbachii is found in the state of Mato Grosso and the “cerrado islands” of Rondônia. These populations in Rondônia occur at the western limit of the Central Brazil Plateau and are diverging from the typical populations of the central cerrado province.
