Species Description - Dioecious shrub or treelet, 1-8 (rarely to 16) m tall; young branchlets subangular or terete, subglabrous or sparsely stellate-pubescent. Leaves in whorls of 3 or opposite; petioles 0.7-5 cm long; lamina drying reddish brown, oblanceolate to obovate, rarely broadly elliptic, coriaceous, 8-14(-26.5) X 2.7-5 (-11) cm, the base and apex acute to obtuse, the tip 0.5-0.8 cm long, leaves above and below with few minute appressed stellate to sublepidote hairs, occasionally glabrescent, young leaves above sometimes with conspicuous appressed silvery stellate-lepidote hairs, with 9-12 pairs of secondary veins, these flat above, distinctly raised below, the margin serrulate or serrate. Cymes 2.5-4 cm long and often pendent, pubescent like the young branchlets, with 10-15 flowers. Fresh flowers greenish yellow or whitish; male floral cup broadly obconical to semiglobose, 2-2.9 mm in diam., 1.5-2.5 mm high, glabrous except for a few appressed bifid or few-branched hairs, the tepals 4-5(-6), narrowly oblong to almost spatulate, 2-4 mm long (Fig. 46b), the floral roof distinctly raised, and glabrous; stamens 9-12; female floral cup subglobose, 3.5-4 mm in diam., 3-3.5 mm high, the pubescence as in the male flowers, the tepals triangular or broadly triangular, ca. 1.4 mm long, the floral roof raised to a cylindrical bulge separated by a groove from an acute central tube sheathing the styles (Fig. 46f), drying dark brown; styles 2-5. Fruiting receptacle 1-1.5 cm in diam., globose and usually with minute (less than 1 mm long) blunt protuberances basally, when fresh and mature red with small cream spots (lenticels) and a strong lemon smell; drupelets 1-3, each with a sty lar aril.

  • Discussion

Siparuna lozaniana is distinguished by oblanceolate to obovate coriaceous leaves (often in whorls of three) with a sparse indumentum of appressed few-branched to sublepidote hairs. It has rather small fruiting receptacles that may be smooth or have a few short, blunt tubercles. The sole collection from Mag- dalena (Kirkbride 2411) resembles the central Andean material in all aspects.
