Species Description - Tree to 3 m tall. Young twigs and petioles totally covered with stellate and entire scales 0.1-0.4 mm in diam. Petioles 2-6 mm long, 1-3 mm in diam. Lamina narrowly elliptic to elliptic (to obovate), 8-21 cm long, 3.5-8.5(-10) cm wide, leaf index (1.6-)2-3, chartaceous to coriaceous, greyish green to brown, shiny above, green below, glabrous above, sparsely to rather densely covered with stellate and some entire scales 0.1-0.4 mm in diam. below, base obtuse to rounded (or acute), apex obtuse, acute to acuminate (acumen to 10 mm long), primary vein impressed above, secondary veins curved, 8-14 on either side of primary vein, raised above, angles with primary vein 60-80°, loop-forming at right angles, loops distinct, smallest distance between loops and margin 2-6(-12) mm, tertiary veins slightly raised above. Inflorescences among leaves, leaf-opposed, supra-axillary or sub-axillary, or terminal, 1-2-flow-ered, to 5 flowers in succession. Indument: pedicels and outer side of bracts and sepals densely covered with brownish stellate scales 0.1-0.4 mm in diam., outer side of petals rather densely to densely covered with stellate hairs, basally with some scales, 0.1-0.3 mm in diam., inner side of sepals and petals rather densely to densely covered with stellate hairs 0.1-0.2 mm in diam., inner base of petals glabrous. Peduncle 3-10 mm long, 2-3 mm in diam. Sympodial rachis to 10 mm long. Pedicels 10-20 mm long, 2-3 mm in diam., to 6 mm just below flower. Lower bract more or less foliaceous, very broadly ovate, 15-35 mm long. Upper bract halfway the pedicel, very broadly ovate, 7-10 mm long, caducous. Flower buds very broadly ovoid. Flowers pale green in vivo. Sepals connate for 10%, ovate to very broadly ovate, 15-25 mm long, 11-18 mm wide, acute to obtuse. Petals subequal, ovate to very broadly ovate, 25-30 mm long, 20-30 mm wide, obtuse to acute, inner base of inner petals callóse, strongly grooved. Stamens 2.5-3.7 mm long, color unknown, apex of connective discoid, 0.2-0.6 x 0.6-1.2 mm, papillate, with some stellate hairs. Carpels 4-7 mm long, ovary totally covered with stellate hairs, stigma glabrous, but apical part densely covered with long hairs. Fruit green in vivo, subglobose, 3-5 cm in diam., basal collar composed of 4-10 connate, sterile carpels, 8-10 mm in diam., not protruding below the fruit, fertile carpels 200-350, narrowly obovoid-obtrulloid to obtrulloid, 12-20 mm long, 5-8 mm in diam., free, laterally flattened, areoles narrowly pyramidal to oblong-obovoid, 5-10 mm high, acute, apiculate (apicule to 1 mm long), sharply 3-5angled, slightly verrucose, totally to densely covered with white, stellate hairs 0.1-0.3 mm in diam. Seeds narrowly obovoid to obovoid, 7-10 mm long, 3-6 mm in diam., acute, dark brown, shiny.

  • Discussion

Duguetia gardneriana is one of the few representatives of this genus occurring in Northeastern Brazil. The first author has tried in vain to relocate this rare species in Pernambuco, hoping to find fresh material of flowers and fruits for study. According to a very recent study by He and Maas (1996) D. gardneriana is closest to D. calycina in leaf and indument characters, as is also confirmed by UPGMA analysis (Fig. 37, 5th cluster). It can be distinguished from the latter by leafy lower bracts and by the more numerous fruiting carpels (200-350, versus 50-100, respectively).

  • Distribution

The Brazilian states of Pernambuco and Sergipe. In coastal forest or in restinga. At sea level. Flowering in February, June and December, fruiting in January and June.
