  • Description

Species Description - Tree or shrub, 2-8 m tall, 4-10 cm in diam. Young twigs and petioles densely covered with brownish, stellate hairs 0.1-0.3 mm in diam. Petioles 5-15 mm long, 2-5 mm in diam. Lamina narrowly oblong-elliptic to narrowly oblong-obovate, 25-40 cm long, (5-)6-12 cm wide, leaf index 3.2-4, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, dark blackish green above, pale green below, glabrous above, sparsely covered with stellate hairs 0.20.3 mm in diam. below, base acute, obtuse, to subcordate, oblique, apex acute to shortly acuminate (acumen to 10 mm long), primary vein impressed above, secondary veins curved, 12-20 on either side of primary vein, raised above, angles with primary vein 50-60°, loop-forming at right angles, loops indistinct, smallest distance between loops and margin 2-5 mm, tertiary veins raised above. Inflorescences among leaves, supra-axillary, sometimes near the base of a lateral shoot, a single rhipidium or composed of 2 rhipidia. Rhipidia 1-3-flowered, to 15 flowers in succession. Indument: pedicels and both sides of bracts, sepals, and petals totally to densely covered with stellate hairs 0.1-0.3 mm in diam., hairs dark brown, those on petals greyish brown. Sympodial rachis to 10 mm long. Pedicels 5-7 mm long, 2 mm in diam., finely grooved, fruiting pedicels to 10 mm long, 3-4 mm in diam. Upper bract at 1/5 to 2/3 of base of pedicel, depressed ovate, ca. 3 mm long, amplexicaul. Flower buds ovoid-triangular. Flowers white to cream in vivo, inner base of petals wine-red. Sepals free, triangular, 12-15 mm long, 7-10 mm wide, acute. Petals subequal, narrowly oblong-elliptic to narrowly obovate, 18-28 mm long, 7-12 mm wide, acute, inner base of inner petals not callose. Stamens ca. 2 mm long, color unknown, apex of connective deltoid, 0.6 x 0.7 mm, acute, totally covered with simple hairs. Carpels ca. 1.5 mm long, ovary densely covered with stellate hairs, stigma glabrous. Fruit green to brown, blackish brown at maturity, with red-orange center in vivo, globose, 5-6 cm in diam., basal collar composed of 18-20 connate, sterile carpels, 8-10 mm in diam., not protruding below the fruit, fertile carpels 90-150, obtrulloid to obconical, 16-25 mm long, 6-12 mm in diam., with a constriction just below areole, free, areoles shallowly pyramidal, 1-5 mm high, obtuse, abruptly apiculate (apicule deltoid, 1-3 mm high), distinctly 4-6-ribbed, irregularly grooved in between the ribs, totally covered with a velutinous indument of dark brown, stellate hairs ca. 0.1 mm in diam. Seeds obovoid, 12-20 mm long, 7-9 mm in diam., obtuse, yellow to orange, dull.

  • Discussion

Duguetia eximia is distinguished by extremely long leaves, the lamina 25-40 cm long, oblique at the base, and (sparsely) covered with stellate hairs below, in combination with a many-flowered inflorescence, most floral and fruiting parts being covered with a dark brown, velutinous indument. In UPGMA analysis it is situated close to the cluster around D. inconspicua (Fig. 37, 1st cluster).

Although this species is very common in French Guiana, future collectors are urged to look for flowering specimens, as good flowers are still very poorly represented among available material.
