  • Description

Species Description - Small shrub of unknown height. Young twigs and petioles densely covered with stellate scales 0.1-0.2 mm in diam. Petioles 2-4 mm long, 1-2 mm in diam. Lamina narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic, 5-10(-12) cm long, (1.5-)2.5-5.5 cm wide, leaf index 2-3.3, coriaceous, dark green to blackish, shiny above, rusty brown to brown below, glabrous above, sparsely covered with stellate scales 0.1-0.4 mm in diam. below, base obtuse, rounded, to attenuate, apex acute to shortly acuminate (acumen 2-5 mm long), rarely somewhat emarginate, primary vein flat to slightly impressed above, secondary veins straight, 7-10 on either side of primary vein, flat to slightly raised above, angles with primary vein 70-85°, loop-forming at right (to obtuse) angles, loops distinct, smallest distance between loops and margin 24 mm, tertiary veins slightly raised on both sides. Inflorescences among leaves, terminal or leaf-opposed, 1-flowered. Indument: pedicels and outer side of bracts and sepals totally covered with stellate scales 0.1-0.2 mm in diam., inner side of sepals and both sides of petals totally to densely covered with stellate hairs 0.1-0.4 mm in diam. Pedicels 4 mm long, 2 mm in diam., fruiting pedicels 5-7 mm long, to 3 mm in diam. Upper bract halfway the pedicel, shallowly to very shallowly triangular, 1-2 mm long. Flower buds subglobose. Flowers white in vivo. Sepals free, deltate to very broadly ovate, 5-7 mm long, 6-7 mm wide, obtuse. Petals subequal, very broadly ovate, strongly concave, 18-20 mm long, 15-23 mm wide, obtuse, inner base of inner petals callose, distinctly grooved. Stamens 2-2.8 mm long, color unknown, apex of connective discoid, 0.3-0.6 x 0.30.6 mm, totally covered with simple hairs. Carpels 24 mm long, ovary totally covered with stellate scales to 0.2 mm in diam., stigma glabrous. Fruit of unknown color, subglobose, 2-3 cm in diam., basal collar composed of 6-7 connate, sterile carpels, 6-7 mm in diam., not or slightly protruding below the fruit, fertile carpels 15-25, obtrulloid to obovoid, 10-15 mm long, 11-16 mm in diam., fused for 20-25%, areoles depressed ovoid to shallowly pyramidal, 2-6 mm high, obtuse, apiculate (apicule to 1 mm long), slightly verrucose, densely covered with stellate scales to 0.2 mm in diam. Seeds broadly obovoid to obovoid, 9-13 mm long, 69 mm in diam., obtuse to rounded, brown to pale brown, shiny.

  • Discussion

Duguetia duckei is only, and insufficiently, known from few collections in savannas near Lago de Faro, Pará, Brazil. It needs further attention, particularly from botanists in the field. It comes very close to D. calycina, differing by smaller leaves (usually less than 10 cm long) and smaller sepals. The fruit is composed of only 15-25 fertile carpels, whereas that of D. calycina is composed of 50-100 carpels. The nearness of both species is reflected in our cluster analysis (Fig. 37, 5th cluster).

Ducke MG11664, also from the type locality, is aberrant from the other collections in having much narrower and acute leaves (5-8 x 1.5-3 cm), vs. broader and obtuse to rounded leaves in all other material (710 x 3.5-5.5 cm).

  • Distribution

Endemic to the Brazilian state of Pará. In savanna (“campina”) vegetation; in sandy soil. At sea level. Flowering and fruiting in May and June.
