  • Description

Species Description - Herb, with the stem rhizomatous, 0.3-4 mm thick, minutely puberulous, predominantly with uncinate hairs, sometimes glabrescent; most internodes short, the stem parts with short internodes ± tuberous. Leaves in spirals, rosulate; lamina basally attached, (broadly) ovate to cordiform or sometimes to subreniform, or peltate and (angulate-)ovate to almost rhombiform, 0.7-4.5 × 0.8-4 cm, chartaceous; apex rounded or to subacute; base (deeply) cordate, or if peltate, then rounded to obtuse; margin subentire to finely or coarsely crenate or repand; upper surface puberulous with minute rigid hairs, sometimes to hirtellous, usually scabridulous; lower surface puberulous to hirtellous with straight and uncinate hairs on the main veins, more sparsely elsewhere; venation pinnate with 2-6 pairs of lateral veins, to almost radiate; petiole 0.5-9(-l 3) cm long, retrorsely puberulous to hirtellous with straight and uncinate hairs; stipules triangular, to 0.3 cm long, uninervate, puberulous, predominantly with uncinate hairs. Inflorescences with (always?) at least the margin of the receptacle purplish; peduncle 0.7-8(-16.5) cm long, retrorsely puberulous and hirtellous with straight and uncinate hairs; receptacle (almost) centrally attached, discoid, (sub)orbicular in outline, 0.4-1 cm diam., the outside puberulous to hirtellous, the fringe to 2.5 mm broad, with sparse, minute, club-shaped hairs; bracts in (2-)3-4 rows on the margin and on the fringe, appressed, ovate, to 0.5 mm long, sparsely puberulous to glabrous, but the larger marginal bracts setulose; staminate flowers intermixed with the pistillate ones; tepals 2, almost free; stamens 2; filaments shorter than the perianth; stigmas equal in length, ca. 0.4-0.5 mm long, whitish (?). Endocarp body 0.8-1 mm diam., distinctly tuberculate.

  • Discussion

The species has basally attached leaves in Hispaniola. Only Leonard et al 12722, a sterile specimen which almost certainly belongs to this species, has peltate leaves. Most collections from Cuba have peltate leaves. The type collection of Dorstenia multisquamae is slightly different in lacking distinctly setulose marginal bracts.

  • Distribution

In Cuba and Hispaniola; usually in crevices of steep limestone rocks in shaded places, sometimes in litter on forest floor; to 1300 m.
