Description
Subspecies Description - Stem only with short internodes. Lamina ovate to cordiform, ca. 1.5 times longer than broad, to 12 cm long, to 8 cm broad; margin lobate to repand; upper surface almost glabrous; lateral veins 4-7, terminating at the margin; petiole to 17 cm long; stipules to 0.5 cm long. Receptacle 0.8-1.8 cm diam.

Discussion
The collections marked with % have features ± transitional to subsp. asaroides, and those marked with * have features ± transitional to subsp. vitifolia. Subspecies paraguariensis approaches subsp. cayapia in the shape of the lamina, but it appears to be more closely related to subsp. vitifolia, and it may even prove to be only a variety of subsp. vitifolia.

In Bolivia, Paraguay, and the adjacent part of Brazil; in gallery forest and cerrado vegetation; at low elevations.
