Description
Species Description - Subshrub (or herb), to 50(-140) cm tall, sometimes branched; rhizome short; stem 2-3 mm thick, puberulous to hirtellous, partly or mainly with uncinate hairs; internodes to 1.5(-2) cm long. Leaves in spirals or tending to distichous; lamina (narrowly) lanceolate to oblong, (5-) 7-17 × (1-)1.5-4 cm, thinly chartaceous, sometimes variegated; apex acute to acuminate; base (sub)acute to attenuate; margin rather coarsely and irregularly crenate-dentate to subentire; upper surface puberulous to hirtellous, mainly with uncinate hairs, scabrous; lower surface puberulous to hirtellous with straight and uncinate hairs, ± scabrous; lateral veins (7-) 10-17,± faintly loop-connected; tertiary venation reticulate, inconspicuous; petiole 0.5-2 cm long, sometimes purplish, puberulous to hirtellous, mainly with uncinate hairs; stipules triangular, to 0.2 cm long, uninervate, soon deflexed, glabrous or sparsely puberulous. Inflorescences solitary or often 2-3 together in the leaf axils, with the peduncle pale green, the receptacle dark green outside and the flowering face bright green or the margin purplish; peduncle 0.5-1.5(-2.5) cm long, hirtellous to hispidulous, mainly with straight hairs; receptacle centrally attached, discoid, suborbicular to ± angular or faintly lobed in outline, (0.5-) 1-2.5 cm diam., the flowering face plane or slightly concave, the outside (sparsely) puberulous to hirtellous, mainly with uncinate hairs, the margin entire to crenulate or dent(icul)ate, the fringe distinct, 1-1.5 mm broad, sparsely minutely puberulous; bracts in 2-3 rows on the margin and on the fringe, appressed or some of the marginal ones radiating or on to 0.5 mm long appendages, ovate to triangular, to 2 mm long, the marginal ones distinctly different in length, shorter and longer ones ± clearly alternating, puberulous or the larger marginal bracts setulose; minute interfloral bracts sometimes present; staminate flowers in the periphery of the flowering face, sometimes a few among the pistillate ones; tepals (2 or) 3; stamens (2 or) 3; filaments (to 3 times) longer than the perianth; perianth of the pistillate flower with 3 minute lobes at the apex; stigmas (almost) equal in length, 0.2-0.8 mm long, white. Endocarp body 1.5-2 × 1.5-1.7 mm, distinctly tuberculate.

Discussion
Dorstenia turnerifolia is a rather variable species. It almost certainly includes D. argentata, based on cultivated material, and is different from the "normal" form of the species, mainly in the conspicuously variegated lamina and the purplish margin of the receptacle. The morphological differentiating characters would justify distinction of a variety. However, the cultivated material on which D. argentata was based apparently has a chromosome number different from that of cultivated material of the "normal" D. turnerifolia, without variegated leaves and entirely green receptacles, 2n = 32 and 2n = 28, respectively (cf. Krause, 1931).
