  • Description

    Species Description - Tree, to 35 m tall. Leafy twigs ca. 10-20 mm thick, puberulous. Lamina elliptic to obovate, ca. 20-50 × 15-30(-40) cm, coriaceous; apex acuminate; base (sub)acute; margin pinnately incised; both surfaces puberulous to hirtellous, on the veins to hirsute; lateral veins 12-16 pairs; tertiary venation scalariform; petiole 3-6 cm long; stipules 8-25 cm long, hirsute to subsericeous to appressed-puberulous. Inflorescences on terminal branches. Staminate inflorescences cylindrical to clavate, 8-30 × 1-4 cm; peduncle 2.5-9 cm long. Pistillate inflorescences ellipsoid to globose to subobovoid, 4-9 × 3-6 cm, covered with conical processes (or in the seedless form) rather smooth; peduncle 4-7 cm long; stigma 1-2 mm long. Infructescences 15-30 cm diam.

    Introduced from Pacific islands, Moluccas, or New Guinea; as a fruit tree in cultivation throughout the tropics; both the seeded and seedless forms are in cultivation.
