  • Description

Species Description - Shrub or tree, to 12(-20) m tall. Leafy twigs 1-2.5 mm thick, sparsely and minutely puberulous. Lamina oblong to elliptic (to lanceolate), 3.5-17 × 1.5-6.5 cm, broadest at or above the middle, ± inequilateral, coriaceous; apex acuminate; base acute to rounded; margin entire; upper surface minutely puberulous on midrib; lower surface sparsely and minutely puberulous on the (base of the) midrib; venation (almost) plane above, prominent beneath; lateral veins 8-12 pairs; tertiary venation reticulate (or tending to scalariform); petiole 0.3-0.8 cm long, 1-2 mm thick, (minutely) puberulous; stipules 0.3-0.5 mm long, (minutely) puberulous, caducous. Staminate inflorescences patent (?), 0.8-4.5 cm long, including the 0.1-0.2 cm long puberulous peduncle; flowers rather crowded to ± dispersed, narrowly (or broadly) sessile; perianth 1-1.5 mm long, 4-parted, ciliolate, sparsely and minutely puberulous outside; stamens (3 or) 4, straight, isomorphic; filaments 0.51.2 mm long; anthers ca. 0.5-0.7 × 0.4-0.7 mm, the connective broad, apiculate. Pistillate inflorescences patent (?), 0.5-3 cm long, to 5 cm long in fruit, including the 0.1-0.8 cm long, puberulous peduncle; rachis sparsely and minutely puberulous; flowers 3-12, (sub)sessile, pedicellate in fruit; pedicel to 1 cm long, (very) sparsely hispidulous to minutely puberulous; perianth ca. 2 mm long, glabrous, the upper part hemispherical to broadly ovoid; stigmas tongue-shaped, ca. 1 mm long, coarsely papillate. Fruiting perianth subglobose, ca. 0.7-0.9 × 0.7-0.9 cm, with the apical part ± discoid and the lower part with a ruminate, almost glabrous surface.

  • Discussion

This species differs from Sorocea affinis in the consistently entire leaf margin, in the flowers being sessile at anthesis, and in the ruminate, subglabrous fruiting perianth. The inflorescences are more compact and the lamina is more coriaceous than those of S. affinis. The fruiting perianth is often covered by mycelium.
