Description
Species Description - Shrubs or trees up to 6 m tall, the stems with narrow longitudinal lines of curled hairs 0.5-1 mm long, otherwise subglabrous. Leaf blades elliptic, mostly 4-11 x 2-5 cm, basally rounded or subtruncate, manifestly or obscurely serrate to entire, acute or acuminate, penninerved (the midrib raised above and beneath), glabrous above, very sparsely stellate-pubescent beneath especially on veins, sometimes vernicose beneath; petioles 7-11 mm long, densely bearded on adaxial surface, otherwise subglabrous; stipules 3-13 mm long, subulate, erect, deciduous. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, the pedicels (7-) 12-15 cm long, slender, sparsely pubescent, the hairs mostly simple, ca. 1 mm long, more abundant on adaxial surface and at distal end; involucellar bracts 8-10, linear-lanceolate to spatulate, more or less incurved, 17-23 x 1-2 mm, sometimes ciliate (densely so at juncture with pedicel), connate basally for 1-1.5 mm; calyx 9-12 mm long, sparsely ciliate, the lobes prominently 3-nerved; corolla 1.5 cm long, yellowish, ca. 7 mm wide distally, with long narrow claw; androecium subequal to corolla, the filaments 1-2 mm long. Fruits 8-9 mm diam., subglabrous; mericarps 5-6 mm high, smooth and rounded, obscurely crested apically.

Pavonia calyculosa has subglabrous foliage and a distinctively crinoid-like involucel.

Distribution
The Atlantic coast of Brazil (Bahia, Espiríto Santo) from 15°S to 20°S.
