Description
Species Description - Subshrubs or shrubs to 2 m tall (to 4 m in Wedel 149), the stems minutely stellate-pubescent. Leaf blades mostly 6-21 x 2-10 cm, elliptic, oblong, or obovate, truncate, crenate-dentate (the margins often ciliate), acute, slightly discolorous, minutely stellate-pubescent; petioles Va the length of the blades or less; stipules 5-9 mm long, subulate. Peduncles axillary, sometimes exceeding the subtending leaves, bearing a dense headlike inflorescence that is actually a condensed raceme; pedicels up to 12 mm long but usually much shorter; involucellar bracts ca. 8, linear, 4-6 mm long, basally gamophyllous; calyx 4-5 mm long; corolla 6-9 mm long, pink; androecium subequal to petals. Fruits 6-8 mm diam.; mericarp body 5 mm high, smooth, each mericarp with 3 retrorsely barbed spines 2.5-5 mm long.

Distribution
Widely distributed from central Mexico and the West Indies to Brazil and Bolivia. It grows in shaded forests and also in disturbed habitats. The type locality for Pavonia umbrosa is at 16°22'S, 67°45'W.
