  • Description

Species Description - Procumbent ("erect" in Harley 19136) perennial herbs, the stems trailing (to 2 m long), hispid, the hairs 1-2 mm long, with dense lines of shorter hairs. Leaf blades mostly 2-3.5 cm long, markedly asymmetrical, deltoid-ovate to angular or hastately lobed, deeply cordate, crenate, acute, the upper surface sometimes with simple hairs 1.5-2 mm long, sometimes with stellate hairs 0.5 mm long, pubescent beneath; petioles ½-1 times the length of the blade; stipules 2-3(-6) mm long, subulate, erect or recurved. Flowers solitary or paired in the leaf axils, the pedicels subequal to or exceeding subtending leaves (1-8 cm long); involu-cellar bracts ca. 15, linear, 10-12(-15) mm long, arcuate, hispid-ciliate, the hairs ca. 2 mm long; calyx 7-8 mm long, hirsute; corolla yellow with dark red center (dark center lacking in Stephens M2), 1.5-2.7 cm long; androecium ca. 8-9 mm long, the staminal column glabrous, pallid; styles slightly exserted from column. Fruits 7-8 mm diam., obovoid, glabrous, the mericarps 4.5 mm long, with an obscure apical beak. Chromosome number, 2n = 56 (Krapovickas & Cristóbal, 1965).

  • Discussion

Pavonia cancellata is a variable species, especially in the character of its pubescence. Gürke (1892b: 516) recognized one extreme form, with densely stellate-pubescent foliage, as P. cancellata var. crassivenosa Gürke, but this appears to me simply to be an extreme of a continuous range of variation. The asymmetrical leaves and prostrate habit are characteristic.

  • Distribution

Widespread in Central America (Nicaragua and Costa Rica) and South America (Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia), where it is often found on sandy soils growing in open (sometimes arid) habitats, at elevations of 100-1000 m.
