Discussion
Gürke (1892b: 506) proposed Pavonia paniculata forma hirsuta Giirke and P. paniculata forma hirta Giirke to distinguish, respectively, those with long simple hairs on the stems from those that lacked them. Both forms have an understory of stellate and glandular hairs, so the distinction does not seem to merit taxonomic recognition. Also, judging from the brief description, the same type of variation may be the basis for the name Pavonia paniculata var. vitifolia St.-Hilaire & Naudin (Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 2, 18: 43. 1842), based on a collection from Abaité, Minas Gerais (specimen not located).
