    Description - Plant flowering 35 cm high, propagating by short ascending shoots. Leaves 15-30 in a dense rosette, suberect, to 38 cm long, obscurely Fine-lepidote; sheaths broadly elliptic, large, pale; blades ligulate, broadly acute and apiculate, slightly narrowed toward base, to 36 mm wide, green throughout, margins bearing spreading scales. Scape erect or ascending, much shorter than the leaves; scape-bracts densely imbricate, broadly elliptic. Inflorescence simple, elliptic or oblong, thick, few-flowered 15-20 cm long, 5-6 cm wide, subdense, glabrous or nearly so. Floral bracts ample with broadly curved margins and a very sharp curved keel, 4-5 cm long, incurved toward apex, orange, each less than half covered by the one below, exceeding the sepals; flowers short-pedicellate. Sepals narrowly elliptic, obtuse, to 38 mm long, strongly nerved when dry; petals to 45 mm long, yellow with a green apex, bearing 2 scales at base; stamens exserted.

    In forest, from near sea level to 1300 m alt, Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais to São Paulo in eastern Brazil.
