  • Description

Species Description - Tree 25-30 m high. Leaves alternate, to 22 cm long. Petiole bearing a single ovoid gland on upper side between base and first pair of pinnae. Pinnae 10-16 pairs, opposite or subopposite. Leaflets 40-44 pairs, opposite, linear-oblong to sigmoid, 5-9 x 1-1.5 mm, apex pointed, base strongly auriculate; main nerve weakly sigmoid. Compound inflorescence axis unbranched, ca. 40 cm long. Peduncles to ca. 8 per inflorescence, alternate, pendent, 8-22 cm long. Capitula ca. 5.5 cm long, biglobose. Hermaphrodite flowers: calyx 5-5.5 mm long (including pseudopedicel of 0.5-1 mm), the lobes 0.5-1 mm long; corolla ca. 6.5 mm long, the lobes 1 mm long; filaments exserted ca. 1.5 mm beyond calyx, free ± to base. Nectar-secreting flowers: calyx to ca. 5 mm long. Staminodial flowers: calyx 7-7.5 mm long; corolla 7.5-9 mm long, the lobes 1-1.5 mm long; filaments exserted to 15 mm beyond calyx, ± united within corolla. Pods strap-shaped, 28-35 (including stipe of 7-10 cm) x 3-3.8 cm, the coriaceous, indehiscent, usually glabrous valves having distinct reticulate venation and depressed around widely spaced seeds; presence of gum unknown. Seeds ca. 11-15 per pod; testa unknown. Field characters. Buds brown. Capitula at anthesis sulfur yellow. Pods brown.

  • Discussion

Material at RB labelled “Ducke HJBR 16859, Bragança” was collected on three dates: 7 Jan 1923 (fr); 23 May 1926 (sterile); 27 Mar 1927 (fl). The type description cites only the last, which is therefore the holotype. Isotypes must be verified by checking the date of collection. In the protologue, Ducke said that he had seen the tree only once so the collections from other dates are topotypes.

Two collections from western Amazonian Brazil are included with doubt. Both have small leaflets and pods with widely spaced seeds but velutinous valves, and they were collected from damp forest. They are not shown on the distribution map. A fruiting specimen at BM, labelled “Mimosa...Rudge” is also apparently P. reticulata. Rudge did not visit South America but bought specimens, including part of Martin’s collection (Steam & Williams, 1957), in which case this specimen may have come from French Guiana.

Local names. French Guiana: Bois macaque blanc (mâle). Brazil: Visgueiro.

Relationships. Ducke regarded Parkia reticulata as differing from P. panurensis (“P. pectinata”) in the color of the capitulum (yellow rather than red and yellow), the pods (valves reticulate or not), and in habit and habitat (a large tree of non-flooded primary forest versus a medium-sized tree from around campinas). The leaflets of P. panurensis are larger than typical for P. reticulata, although there is a slight overlap, and they are more strongly sigmoid. However, these two species are closely related and more material of P. reticulata is needed to determine its true status and distribution.
