Description
Species Description - Stems cespitose, 2-3(-6) m tall, 0.8-1.5 cm diam. Leaves 5-10; leaf spines scattered, dark brown, terete, to 6 cm long, on sheath, petiole, and proximal part of rachis; sheath 15-30 cm long; ocrea to 10 cm long; petiole 17-25 cm long; rachis 15-35 cm long; blade simple or with 2-15 pinnae per side but then the apical one always wider, regularly arranged, spreading in different planes or more or less in the same plane, sigmoid; middle pinnae 22-35 × 2-5 cm. Inflorescences interfoliar, exserted through leaf sheath, becoming infrafoliar; peduncle 2-4.5 cm long, straight, spiny or not spiny; prophyll 7-11 cm long; peduncular bract 8-16 cm long, sulcate, whitish brown-tomentose, with short, brown spinules in lines along the sulcae; rachis 2.5-3 cm long; rachillae 5-6, 3-4 cm long, densely covered at anthesis with short spinules; triads irregularly arranged among paired or solitary staminate flowers; staminate flowers to 6.5 mm long; sepal lobes to 1 mm long; petals to 6 mm long; stamens 6; pistillode absent; pistillate flowers 3.5-4 mm long; calyx tubular, to 3.5 mm long, spinulose; corolla tubular, to 4 mm long, spinulose; staminodes 6, minute; fruits to 2 cm diam., globose to obovoid, purple-black; mesocarp juicy; endocarp depressed-globose, the sterile pores displaced longitudinally; endocarp fibers free, numerous; fruiting perianth with 3-lobed, spinulose calyx and lobed, spinulose corolla, without staminodial ring.
