    Description - Plant stemless, flowering 4-8 dm long. Leaves erect, densely appressed-lepidote, sheaths broadly elliptic-ovate, large, dark brown, blades narrowly lanceolate, 3-8 cm broad, gray-green, often purple-spotted. Scape usually much curved, about equaling the leaves; scape-bracts elliptic, long-caudate, inflated, usually the loosely sheathing bases shorter than the internodes. Inflorescence erect or pendulous, bipinnate or rarely tripinnate, axis more or less geniculate; primary bracts ovate to ovate-elliptic, apiculate to short-caudate, from half as long as to longer than the spikes, finely lepidote; spikes spreading or reflexed, distichous-flowered often becoming secund; rhachis nearly straight. Floral bracts shorter than the sepals, broadly ovate, nerved, lepidote; flowers spreading, subsessile. Sepals obovate or oblong, lepidote; petals slightly exserted, conglutinated, yellow; stamens included. Capsule cylindric, acute, 30 mm long.
