  • Description

    Variety Description - Perennial, cespitose herbs to 35 cm high. Rhizome ascending. Culms erect, smooth or sulcate when dried, 0.7-1.5 mm diam. Basal leaves several to each culm; sheaths to 0.5 cm long; blades linear, 515 x 0.2-0.4 cm, flat, gradually tapering to an obtuse, callose tip; margin pilose. Cauline leaves 12 to each culm, to 2 cm long, similar to basal leaves but with shorter blades and sheaths. Inflorescence an unbranched anthela of flower heads, to 5 x 3 cm, branches not spreading, flower heads round or elongate, 0.8-1.5 x 0.8 cm, each with 6-12 flowers. Proximal inflorescence bracts resembling small cauline leaves, distal bracts shorter and scariose. Tepals equal, 3.5-4 mm long, lanceolate, acuminate, castaneous. Stamens 6, ca. 2.2 mm long; anthers linear ca. 1.5 mm long, longer than the filaments. Capsule obovoid, mucronulate, shorter than the tepals. Seeds ellipsoid, 1-1.4 mm long, when immature with white spongy caruncula occupying about ½ the length of the seed.

    Luzula campestris var. multiflora is a temperate Eurasian and North American taxon; the Costa Rican occurrence reported here is the first record for the neotropical region.
