  • Discussion

The areolation on the dorsal surface of the leaves of Eulacophyllum, like in Catagoniopsis, has a distinctive scaly appearance under a hand-lens or dissecting microscope. The species is further distinguished by its somewhat complanate-foliate stems, its erect-spreading, oblong-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, sometimes lingulate, cultriform leaves with acute to obtuse apices, its plane leaf margins that are serrate to serrulate above and serrulate to entire below, its long-rectangular to long-hexagonal leaf cells with thickened, blunt ends, often having a prorulose appearance, and its quadrate to rectangular alar cells, usually with more on one side of the costa than the other.

Eulacophyllum cultelliforme is sometimes confused with Entodontopsis nitens but the leaves of that species are generally larger and not cultri-form, they are usually more broadly obtuse and they have a more extensive region of larger, quadrate to rectangular alar cells.

  • Distribution

Widespread; throughout Central America, the West Indies and south to Bolivia, central Brazil and Paraguay (Fig. 19). Occurring on sandstone or limestone rocks and cliffs, often in or beside streams, but otherwise in semi-dry areas, rarely on bases of trees, exposed roots, on rotten logs, at elevations of 1000 m or less.
