Description
Species Description - Plants yellowish green, in loose or dense, glossy mats. Stems complanate-foliate, to 5 cm long, 2-3 mm wide, simple or irregularly and sparingly branched. Leaves 1.5-2.5 mm long, 0.7-1.0 mm wide, ovate-lanceolate, slightly concave, acuminate; margins plane or weakly recurved at base, entire; costa strong, usually extending 2/3-3/4 the distance to apex, bulging on dorsal surface; cells smooth, median cells 56-85 µm long, ca. 5 µm wide; alar cells irregularly angled, 14-33 µm long, 9-14 µm wide. Dioicous. Setae reddish, straight, 1.4-2.0 cm long; capsules orange to brown, inclined to horizontal, 1-2 mm long, ovoid to ellipsoidal, scarcely contracted below mouth when dry; opercula conic, 0.5-0.7 mm long. Spores 9-12 µm in diam.

Discussion
This is a distinctive species characterized by complanate-foliate stems with an epidermal layer of large, thin-walled cells, foliose pseudoparaphyllia, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate leaves with thin-walled, fusiform, median cells, few differentiated, irregularly angled, collenchymatous alar cells, a dioicous condition and inclined to horizontal capsules.

Distribution
Rare; central Chile and the Juan Fernandez Islands (Fig 16). On soil and rock under shrubs, at elevations to 630 m.
