    Species Description - Herbs 50-85 cm tall, corms bright red-orange inside. Leaves linear, (7-) 18-45 cm long, 0.6-1.1 cm wide, fleshy, apex somewhat thickened, glabrous. Inflorescence a thyrse, 4.5-7 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, color of inflorescence (cataphylls, rachis, bracts and pedicels) ferruginous orange to red. Indument of inflorescence: cataphylls, rachis, bracts, pedicels, and outer side of outer tepals densely villose, hairs 0.5-1.5 mm long; inner tepals, ovary, and capsule glabrous. Number of cataphylls four or five, 2-10 cm long, 0.4-1 cm wide. Primary bracts ovate-triangular, 1.2-2 cm long. Floral bracts ovate-triangular 0.7-1.2 cm long. Pedicels to 3 mm long. Flowers creamy, often basally and/or apically orange-red. Tepals (narrowly) elliptic, 12-16 mm long, 5-6 mm wide. Stamen 6-7 mm long, filament red, anther black. Staminodes red with white apex, linear, 3-3.5 mm long. Style red, 4-6 mm long. Ovary red. Capsule shiny, marroon to brownish red, ellipsoid in outline, 3-lobate in cross-section, 12-15 mm long, 10-16 mm wide, margins of valves prominent, style persistent. Seeds discoid, 3-6 mm in diam., densely covered with multiseriate red trichomes to 1 mm long.

  • Distribution

    Restricted to the Cerro de la Neblina in Venezuela. In open Heliamphora-Neblinaria savannas with Euterpe, along streams, between 1800 and 2100 m. Flowering between November and February.
